(Via Richard Eriksson) - I love Korean food and I love Chinese food and the mixture sounds heavenly. I believe that Da Rae on Kingsway serves something like cha chiang mein.
Why? So they can post corrections to their 2004 Annual Guide to Eating and Drinking in Vancouver. Such as the fact that Daimo Noodle house on Main Street is now called Kwong Chow Congee & Noodle House and it has been that way since 2002!
How times have changed! When we immigrated to Canada from the Philippines back in 1965, there were basically no Filipino nannies in Canada; most Filipinos were were not nannies, they were professionals of another sort (nurses, engineers, etc.). Now, many of the Filipino immigrants in our major cities are nannies.
Guu for Otokomae used to be my favourite place for lunch in Gastown. So much so, that I went there once a week on average.
Well, I didn't go last week and today I went and was told that they are no longer open for lunch. I hope this was a one-time event but I fear the worst.
I'll double check next week and let you know.
It's too bad; I can understand why they might do this; the place was never crowded at lunch!
Koon Bo (5682 Fraser Street, 604 323-1218, closed Mondays) is an upretentious Chinese restaurant tucked away in a mini-mall at 41st and Fraser.
It's a favourite of Barb's family (and judging by our visits, a favourite of many Chinese families; we suggest making a reservation if you come during peak times) and now is one of my favourites too.
Barb liked the fine crumb texture and the contrasting crunchy sugar topping. And the aromatic sweetness of the cardamom. Mmmm. $4 of delicious bread fun at the Halso Konditori/Swedish Bakery.
