First Visit: Nooru Mahal - our newest Dosa fav

We've added Nooru Mahal (4354 Fraser Street at 28th, 604 873 9263 and 1391 Kingsway at Knight, 604 875 1283) to our short list of favourite Dosa places (in addition to Del-Hi Darbar) after our first visit to the Fraser location tonight.

The dosas are huge and exceptional. A slightly different style (not as smooth and crispier) than the ones at Del-Hi Darbar but equally delicious. And the spicy chicken and spinach filling that we had in our Chicken Mattar Alu Dosa ($8.95) was outstanding as well as the thick sambar broth that came with it.

Our second dish was a Sri Lankan dish called Beef Kothu Roti ($6.00). We thought Roti was bread, but this was a noodle like dish seasoned with star anise, and a yummy dipping sauce with lemon wedges on the side. Delicious. The lucky dip of the night!

The total with a mango shake came to less than $20 before tip. A tasty and bargain meal out for two. We'll be back!

I will second the dosas: delicious and cheap. Watch out for the butter chicken though! Ick! The worst I've ever had.

Roti *is* bread. You must have had the beef string hopper kothu. String hoppers are a noodle-like specialty from Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan roti is different from standard flatbread roti: it is layered (also found in Malaysia and South India). As for the butter chicken, one should not go to a South Indian restaurant for Panjabi food, as one should not go to a typical (North) Indian restaurant for thosai/dosa. For your next trip to Nooru Mahal, I would recommend the Prawn Devile and the Lamb Kothu Roti. The eggplant curry is good there too. Another good South Indian restaurant is the new Chutney Villa on Broadway @ Main.

Suresh: thanks for the clarifications yes, don't get butter chicken at a South Indian Restaurant And yes we were pretty sure Roti is bread but you never know... We will try the prawns and Lamb Kothu Roti next time, thanks for the suggestion!

good to know about the butter chicken glad you liked the dosas too!
