Barb and I have loved the Stilton Cheesecake at Diva at the Met for many years. A great combination of subtle stilton cheese after glow combined with sweet and cheese flavours. Incredible.
I enjoyed the delicious burgers ($4.50) and fries ($3.50 for a large) that I tried last week at Vera's Burger Shack (1935 Cornwall Avenue, 604 228-8732). As befits its Kits Beach location, Vera's is open, loud and boisterous in a good way.
Actually this is not really a first visit report. I have been to the Salty Tongue (213 Carrall Street, 604 815-7258) many times since I first found out about it, but for some reason never filed a first report. Perhaps, I am trying to keep this place for myself :-) !
Vij's Rangoli (1488 West 11th, 64 736-5711) is one part cafe and one part market where you can buy Vij's incredibly tasty food (he calls them curries: I bet they are delicious but I've never tried them; it's only a matter of time before we do!). It's a small, open room that is trendy and fashionable but not oppressively so. And the kitchen is open so you can watch the action. Fun.
I will write a mini-review soon, but to tide you over, here are some pictures of Vij's Ranjoli's awesome food at our lunch there last week. In the meantime, check out our Vij's Rangoli first visit report.
Good luck to the recently opened Vintropolis (check out Tim Pawsey's Vintropolis Courier writeup) at 1809 West 1st ( 604 738-2727) on the site of the former Bombay Cafe (I'll miss their chicken frankie!) and before that Sienna. This location seems to be a tough one on restaurants.
We don't have cable so I have never seen Rob Feenie's Food Channel show, New Classics. I really enjoyed watching him live though. He was warm, friendly, knowledgeable and responsive to the audience.
