Top ten chip shops in the UK

Inspired by our Pajo's report, Mark Allerton (who's a Brit living in Vancouver), left a comment with a link to an article about the Top ten chip shops in the UK.  Thanks Mark! Of course, if anybody out there actually tries one of these chippies in the UK, we'd love to hear from you!

First Visit: Aurora Bistro

The Aurora Bistro (2420 Main, 604 873-9944) has a wonderful pork tenderloin dish.   Glazed with mustard seed and maple syrup, perfectly cooked, tender and juicy.  And the perfect complement; an apple goat cheese crisp.  This "large" plate ($19) is reason enough for pork fans to visit the restaurant.

Carmanah's Steveston Restaurant Reviews

While researching my news item on Pajo's in Steveston on Google, I came across Carmanah's Steveston restaurant review site.  She has lots of Steveston restaurant reviews including a review of Pajo's.  Check it out!  It's clear to me that she has a voice of her own and therefore, like Saab Ken, should start her own blog.

Ken, or Carmanah if you are interested in having a blog of your own, please let me know!

Basic Granola

Recently I've been trying creative ways to eat more yogurt. So far my favourite way is to have yogurt with fresh local berries and homemade granola. Here's my basic recipe for granola. Of course there are a 101 different variations! One can use different types of nuts and seeds, add different fruit.

This recipe is not very sweet as the dried fruit adds a lot of sweetness. If you prefer a sweeter granola, double the honey and the sugar.

Dept:

Basic Granola

3 cups rolled oats or old-fashioned oats
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup whole almonds, chopped
1/3 cup raw, unsalted pumpkin seeds
1/ 3 cup walnuts (or other nuts), chopped
2 Tbsp. oil
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp. honey
2 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups dried fruit

In a large mixing bowl, combine oats, flour, seeds and nuts.
In a medium bowl, combine oil, water, brown sugar, honey and vanilla. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
Pour liquid ingredients into dry ingredients and mix well.

First Visit: Pajo's in Steveston

Last Sunday, we had a craving for fish and chips so we indulged ourselves by finally trying Pajo's at the wharf in Steveston (at the foot of 3rd avenue, no telephone number on their website).

And what an indulgence it was.  Fresh fish, lightly battered.  Beautiful home made fries.  Not cheap though.  A large (enough for two!) halibut and chips is $10.75 and a large cod and chips is $9.  But definitely worth it as a splurge.  And the ambiance is great, right by the water, lovely!

Globe and Mail review of Feenie's

Mnorrie pointed out (thanks!) the Globe and Mail review of Feenie's by Jamie Maw.

The food sounds great.  I am intrigued by the  shepherd's pie with duck confit, truffles and mushrooms .  Another one to put on our list.  We'll have to try it when the weather gets cooler and the hype has died down a little.
