Rice Pillau

A few weeks ago I brought rice pillau to a potluck dinner. Here is my version. This is more of a Punjabi style pillau, but you can substitute and omit the spices and vegetables as you like.

1 Tbsp. minced fresh ginger
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 onion, finely chopped

The food timeline

The food timeline is a fascinating window into history of food. For example, tomatoes were not used in Europe until 1544.

The accompanying culinary timeline is also very cool.

Please check both out for more fascinating food facts!

Robbie Burns Chinese New Year Dinner in today's Sun

The Gung Haggis Fat Choy / Robbie Burns Chinese New Year Dinner that we mentioned on the 16th was the subject of a hilarious column by Pete McMartin in today's Vancouver Sun. Check it out for more background on the event. Please note that we were slightly incorrect in our last newsitem; there's no need to phone for advance tickets.

Sunrise Market: a Vancouver Institution

On Saturday, Barb and I went shopping at Sunrise Market, a fixture in Vancouver's Chinatown for many years. It's well worth shopping there. Please check out our review of Sunrise Market for more details.

Sunrise Market

Sunrise Market is a Vancouver Chinatown institution.

Barb's family have been going there for many years. It is a Chinese supermarket and so it has fresh produce, fresh meats and Chinese, Japanese and other Asian ingredients. It is not the prettiest of places but it is crammed with excellent foodstuffs and oozes character and integrity! And of course they feature tofu from their sister operation, Sunrise Tofu.

Thanks for the link, Tom Wiebe!

Asia Market

Recently Roland and I have been trying out several Southeast Asian recipes (Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, etc.). This weekend I planned to make laksa (Malaysian curried noodle soup) and I needed to pick up some ingredients that I can't find anywhere else. So we headed to Asia Market in Chinatown.
We found all the ingredients we needed and many more we've been wanting to try. If you're planning to cook an authentic Southeast Asian recipe, this store would be a great place to visit.
