Blitzen Break (website forthcoming at www.blitzenbreak.com, 322 West Hastings, 604 688-1655) is a hole in the wall German eatery specializing in German sausages. The atmosphere is pleasant and there is actually a counter and a few tables where you can sit inside.
From Roland's news item on the revival of lard in Italian cooking, it sounds like I thoroughly enjoyed chowing on tubs of Italian lard on our honeymoon. Let me explain....
Much as I like cookbooks, I doubt I will ever buy Ferran Adria's El Bulli, 1998-2002 (for those who read Spanish, check out the Spanish El Bulli website). At over $US 125, it's just too expensive to justify for a book that's written in Spanish (I might be tempted by an English version!).
Barb and I enjoyed an excellent lemon tart and marzipan tart at Anona Fine Food and Catering (3610 Main Street at 20th, 604 255 2932).
Both were delicious and both were $3.50 each. The marzipan tart had caramel drizzled on top which combined nicely with the almond from the marzipan. And we are suckers for lemon tarts!
We will be back to check out their other sweet and savoury food!
If you are planning on eating at Dine Out Vancouver 2003, here's a tip for Lumiere: Get there before they open. Since they don't take reservations and they open at 5:30, you need to get there at 5:15 or sooner so you can be in the first seating.
On the weekend we cooked a Mexican meal to celebrate Kerrie's birthday. I made tortilla soup, chicken mole, jicama sprinkled with lime juice and a chile-lime seasoning we bought in Mexico, an orange, onion, avocado salad and rice. For dessert we had tres leches cake.
Krispy Kreme is still not open in Vancouver and I have no idea when it will be! It turns out that my source's friend's Krispy Kreme doughnuts were flown in from the USA and NOT bought locally in Vancouver.
