Mahek is one of my favourite Indian restaurants around. The food is authentic, tasty and inexpensive.
Because I work in the Surrey/Delta area, I've been to Mahek several times. However, we couldn't find a reason to trek out to Delta for a meal any other time. This week some friends from Seattle came up for laser eye surgery and stayed in Surrey. What an ideal chance to get together and show off Mahek to our friends!
Mahek features a wide range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices and your choice of how "hot" you would like your dishes.
NB: This restaurant has been renamed to Guu Kuimonoya but, other than the name, nothing has changed; same food, same great buzz and same great prices!
After many recommendations from my Japanese hairdresser, Barb and I went to Raku restaurant on Sunday.
What can I say? She was right!
Raku is cheap, cheerful, delicious, noisy and delightful. Tapas style Japanese food at great prices ($4-$9 which is free for my American friends :-) is what you get.
It's not usual sushi, or teppanyaki or teriyaki that you get at most Japanese restaurants.

While on vacation, I made an effort to slow down from my usual frantic pace and savour extra time to prepare some slow cooked meals. This was inspired by the "slow food" movement that started in Italy and is now finally influencing North America. The movement celebrates a slower paced approach to enjoying food, from producing to cooking to eating (a real backlash to our fast food, fast everything mentality!).
5 lb. meaty beef short ribs Salt and pepper 2 Tbsp. oil 3 cloves garlic 1 1/2 cups red wine 4 cups beef or chicken broth 3 bay leaves 3 sprigs rosemary 6 medium carrots 1 1/2 lb. nugget potatoes 1 lb. chippollini or pickling onions Cornstarch
Cut short ribs into individual ribs. Season with salt and pepper. Heat 1 Tbsp. oil over high heat. Brown ribs in batches, adding more oil if necessary. When all ribs have been browned, saute garlic but do not burn.
We're staying with Madeleine and Ted, Roland's sister and brother-in-law, this week. Their neighbour Sadie popped by today with some beautiful leeks and herbs she had just pulled out of her garden. What a treat to have fresh leeks, pungent and sweet!!
