Saltena aka Bolivian Meat Turnovers

Saltenas are a juicier Bolivian version of Spanish empanadas according to the Washington Post (via woifm) . Something to try! Anybody know of a good Bolivian restaurant in Vancouver with Saltenas? If so, please let us know!

Grilled Asparagus

Spring is here and it's the season for one of my favourite vegetables, asparagus. Most of the time I like asparagus simply prepared so that all of its clean fresh flavour can shine through. Last night we tried grilling our asparagus and it turned out great!

You can serve the grilled asparagus as is, or toss with a light vinaigrette for a lovely spring salad.

Grilled Asparagus

Fresh asparagus
Extra virgin olive oil
Salt

Choose asparagus that is at least 1 cm in diameter and are similar in diameter.
Trim tough ends and gently rinse. Dry on paper towels.
Drizzle with oil and toss asparagus to lightly coat. Sprinkle with salt.
Meanwhile, heat barbeque. When barbeque is hot, carefully place asparagus onto grill, perpendicular to the grill so the asparagus don't fall through.
Grill for about 2 minutes, then turn asparagus over to grill evenly on all sides.
Grill asparagus until barely tender, about 4 to 5 minutes.

David Koop Reviews Habibi's

I've always wanted to try Habibi's (warning gratuitous use of Flash!) but just never got around to it! But I think I will now after reading David Koop's review!

Cuppa Joe Coffee

Cuppa Joe Coffee is a local coffee bar that serves up some fine coffee. If you're tired of overroasted, chain style coffee joints, Cuppa Joe is a refreshing change. Their coffee is mellow, flavourful and they pride themselves on serving as recently roasted as possible beans.

Since they started their retail store, Gord and Robert (my friend Susan's husband!), the owners of Cuppa Joe, are now roasting their own beans and selling roasted coffee to other stores and eateries.

My Favourite Pots

If you cook, you must have pots. My favourite pots for western style cooking are made by Paderno. I love these pots! They heat evenly and hold heat well. They don't drip after you pour something out of them. And the handles are welded on (versus being bolted on).

Mini-Review: Habibi's

I still remember my first encounter with falafel. It was my last year of high school and I was precipitously close to failing/dropping out. I spent a lot of time hanging out in the environs of the University of Melbourne, which was full of student flophouses, eclectic stores and exotic eateries. One time I found this corner store that served something I'd never heard of, called "falafel", so of course I tried it (an instance of the stray dog school of dining).

David Koop reviews Safari Pies

In what I hope will be the first of many, David Koop has written a review of Safari Pies (a purveyor of nostalgia-laden oh so gourmet :-) meat pies) in City Square. Thanks David! Another place to check out!

Mini-Review: Safari Pies

For ten years when I was a kid I lived in Australia. A staple fast food item at that time was the meat pie. A typical meat pie consisted of a thin layer of ground mystery meat in greasy gravy inside a non-porous pastry shell.

Sarah's Mango Salsa

Last night Sarah made a delicious fresh mango salsa for the Cinco de Mayo party. The sweet mango is rounded out with diced avocado with just a bite of chili and onion. Delicious!

This would be great served with grilled fish, pork or chicken!
