Hazelmere Organic Farms is open Saturdays

At the Deconstructing Supper premier, we met Gary and Naty King of Hazelmere Organic farmers (organic food supplier to Bishop's).

We found out from Gary and Naty that their farm has a Saturday market on Saturdays from 9:30 to 5p.m. where they sell their organic produce in season as well as other organic products.

We'll definitely be making the trek out to Surrey to check this market out some Saturday soon!

The Julie/Julia Project

The Julie/Julia Project is Julie Powell's riveting, irreverent and funny blog of her daily attempts to cook, in order, all 536 recipes in Julia Child's classic 1961 cookbook, Mastering the Art of French cooking. Read it (I recommend starting from the beginning in August and working your way sequentially through.

Winter Squash

In the past few years I've begun to experiment with winter squash. We didn't eat winter squash at all when I was growing up. Pumpkins were for carving! And the thought of eating hard squash brought back hungry memories of my parents' childhood in Japanese occupied Hong Kong.

Winter squash gets a bit of a bad rap. It's one of those veggies that people either love or hate. I think it's like the old fish deal: people don't like it because they just haven't eaten it done properly!

Buy Apples from the UBC Apple Festival!

We went down to the UBC Apple Festival and bought 4 bags of apples (each $5.00) for cooking and eating.

Some of the obscure apples are gone but there are still lots of great apples left. If you like apples, I would urge you to visit tomorrow and buy some apples or apple trees. There are also apple treats and apple tasting (so you can figure what to buy!) for $2.

Here's a picture of the apples that Barb and I and some friends bought:

Anne Garber's Evalu8, has an excellent article today entitled The real skinny on critics: How we do what we do...and why where she states that the most important thing is the food. We agree! Check it out for more insight into the world of food critics.
