If I was so bold as to summarize the virtues of Hapa Izakaya (1479 Robson Street at Nicola, 604 689-4272) it would be: Guu for Grownups!
Guu is like going over to your friend's house in university to eat. But this wouldn't be the usual student fare since your friend happens to be an excellent Japanese chef!
My friend Larry wants to learn how to cook and I've offered to teach him. Over the next few months I'll be featuring stories about my adventures in coaching him in cooking.
To start the series, here are some reasons why one should learn to cook.
For the last 2 days, I've been hankering for something chocolate. Odd for me, since I'm not at all a chocoholic. And I wonder if my craving is due to this recipe for brownie pudding from Lucy Waverman's column in the Globe and Mail this past Saturday.
Since I've been deemed Larry's "cooking coach", I've been thinking a lot about how to cook. And it's been a great challenge. There is so much that is involved in cooking that has become habitual and that I completely take for granted.
Where does one start to learn how to cook? Of course, one can learn passively by watching gastro-porn on the Food Network or cooking shows on PBS. But to get some hands-on experience, there are a few things to consider.
Why should one learn to cook? There are many arguments for and against learning to cook. And there are also many excuses not to cook.
I can't quite remember not being able to cook or not being involved with my food at some level. I'm sure that in my early childhood and infancy, my cooking was limited, but I was always around food and the kitchen. And I started to bake using my EasyBake oven when I was four years old. So, I am biased towards learning how to cook.
Based on tanyarat's successful French Laundry lunch reservation saga (and on email we've received recently) it definitely looks like reserving in person is the way to go. What's worrying is she got there at 9:30a.m. and the person in front of her got the last table for dinner.
I'd love to go to Hong Kong and taste the heavenly dim sum described in A trip to the heart of Dim Sum. (free registration required). Oh well, it will have to wait until the SARS epidemic is over! And until I have more money!
