First Visit: Del-Hi Darbar on Main

How and why I first tried Masala Dosas back in the late 80s at the Madras Cafe in Ottawa across from the Britannia cinemas is a mystery that has been fogged by the mists of time. Did Coleman or did Doug recommend it?

Whatever it was, ever since my first Masala Dosa at the Madras Cafe (which seems to still be there at 66 Wylie Avenue, Ottawa) back in the late 80s, I have been hooked by this combination of paper-thin crepe and spicy but not too spicy potato and onion filling served with coconut chutney and sambar.

So much so that I seek it out at every opportunity! And when I found out that Del-Hi Darbar ( 2120 Main St. at 5th, 604 877-7733) had it on their menu, we had to try it out!

I am happy to report that it was excellent. Thin, crispy and large with an tasty filling that wasn't too hot nor too bland. A bargain at $5.95!

We also had a bhhel poori for about $6 that was great too! One of my favourites (thanks to Vijay for introducing this to me at that wonderful restaurant in North London all those years ago!) Fried noodles, puffed rice, potatoes, and tamarind. Bitter sweet, subtly spicy goodness!

Needless to say we will be back for a full mini-review

Masala Dosa, Bhel Poori, North London. I'm thinking Drummond Street, next to Euston Station - home of many fine veggie indian places, and where I had my first Masala Dosa. Definitely will have to check this place out.

I would, but good 'ol Tim (Pawsey) beat me to it, so I'll bunt the ball this time. See: http://www.vancourier.com/013103/entertainment/013103en5.html

Did that just become another restaurant review ?

nope but if you want to write something a little bit more detailed i could post it as another Saab Ken mini-review!

I believe Del-Hi Darbar has same owner as the new 6-month old Natraj location on W. Broadway @ Willow. Standard Moghul fare carried over from their Fraser(?) location, made with consistent quality and reasonable prices, offered in a large multi-room space with panoramic view of the N. Shore mountains. Probably one of the best rooftop patios on the south side of False Creek. Best part is they're two blocks from home : )

cool! Natraj on Broadway and Willow! Another place to try thanks! (it's close for us too! about a 20 minute walk!)

Ah... the suburbs :-)

ha ha! you must live in Yaletown or the WestEnd or Strathcona then!

don't remember the name of the restaurant but i think it was in Harrow which I guess is North but not really in London!
