Derek Miller on Samosa Garden

Derek Miller, an excellent Vancouver blogger and writer, sent (thanks!) us the following short piece on Samosa Garden (3502 Kingsway, 604 437-3502) which we quote here with his permission:

I didn't see Samosa Garden (EDITOR's NOTE: the website doesn't appear to be working at the time of writing!) anywhere on your VanEats review list, but you must try it. It's on Kingsway, near the Burnaby border, inside the Circle Square mini-mall, but it's well worth the trip.

It is an Indian restaurant run by two brothers from Uganda (I think—perhaps Kenya), and they have an unusual and fabulous take on Indian food, as well as a more African-style decor than other Indian restaurants.

It's a fairly large place, and is often busy, because the food is extremely good. (Last night, for a Saturday Valentine's Day special, they had a couple's meal for $35, and were absolutely packed to the rafters, even at 9 p.m.) I particularly recommend the karai lamb, beef, or chicken. The butter chicken is also, so far, the best I've found in the city, as is the naan bread, which besides being yummy, is HUGE.

Anyway, worth checking out when you get the chance. It's a tad more expensive than you might expect if you order from the main menu, but worth every penny. The weekday takeout specials (from 1 to 5 p.m.) and the ever-changing buffet (usually mostly vegetarian) are a steal, however.

Please let me know if you have reviewed it and I somehow missed that. :)

No it's not on our site, but it is definitely on our list. Now more than ever.

We've been there a few times, and would have to agree that it is quite good. If you are looking for company, give is a call, we'd gladly go back!

Samosa Garden is also great for parties. They can set you up with buffet style dinners for reasonable prices. They have 2 separate back rooms that can be very private. We had a library staff party for 30 people one time, another time it was a presentation dinner organized by Asian Heritage Month Society for 80 when Jim Wong-Chu and Kuldip Gill recieved their Queen's Jubilee Medals. The restaurant is decorated in an African theme from Kenya, as that is where the owner/brothers came from. Pretty cool - sort of an Afro-Indo-Canadian restaurant, complete with zebra skins etc. Todd

great to hear you like it too! we tried it 1.5 weeks ago and loved our first visit i will psost something soon about our first visit

Hey Kerrie, Expect a call before the weekend! Samosa Garden is one restaurant we have been wanting to try for a long, long time and what better excuse to go than fine company? And the fact that we want to eat out as much as we can before the baby comes!
