2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup shortening
4 oz. unsweetened chocolate
2 cups granulated sugar
2 tsp. vanilla extract
Icing sugar, cinnamon sugar or cocoa
Sift together flour, baking soda and salt.
Melt shortening and chocolate over simmering water. Transfer to a large mixing bowl and beat in sugar.
Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla.
Add flour mixture and combine well.
Chill dough at least 1 hour.
Form into 1" balls. Roll in icing sugar, cinnamon sugar or cocoa. Place on parchment lined cookie sheets.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes. For crisper cookies, bake 2 minutes longer.
Makes 3 1/2 dozen
Chocolate Mint Crinkles: Substitute 1 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract and 1 tsp. vanilla for the vanilla.
