Barb and I finally had the chance to visit Café Bombay last week.
It was a Friday night at about 9p.m. We walked in and were pleasantly surprised by live Indian music.
The room's layout hasn't changed but the decor is now soothing Indian complete with vintage photos of India on the wall.
Since it was so late, we only ordered two starters and one appetizer. We enjoyed the "Frankie" for $6.95 which is a roti with tandoori chicken inside served with three chutneys (our favourite was the green coriander chutney) and pickled onions on the side. Mmmm! We'll be ordering this one again!
We also had a beef kakori kebab with the same three chutneys for $8.95. This was a very large portion of grilled marinated beef.
For our main course, we split a Goan macchi curry fish for $10.95 (All entrees come with rice or naan). This was my favourite part of the meal because the coconut based sauce was tart and tasty.
Finally, we split gulab jamun with mango ice cream and pistachio nuts for $5.95. I dream of gulab jamun and this one definitely will keep me dreaming good dreams!
Our total bill including one lassi, two appetizers, one main course (including rice) and one order of garlic naan came to $40.71 without tip.
After the meal, we talked with the staff. The restaurant has only been open for six weeks and their goal is to offer a glimpse into the world of Indian cuisine outside of the northern Indian fare that most restaurants serve.
Apparently, the Frankie is a Bombay street snack which the owner tried in LA and with his Bombay wife re-created here for us.
We look forward to coming back in the future and trying out other seldom found dishes like the Frankie!
