When I lived in Germany from 95-98, we used to stop by at a wonderful schnitzel restaurant in Austria on our way back from skiing at Lech. Oh the schnitzel! Enormous, ultra-thin and delicious.
Yesterday we tried the schnitzel at Cafe Katzenjammer (4441 West 10th Avenue, 604 222 2775). For $14.95, I had a Jaeger (with mushroom sauce) Schnitzel. Barb took advantage of their January only Tuesday and Wednesday special and had a Wiener Schnitzel for $9.95 normally $13.95. The schnitzel's not quite as good as I used to enjoy at that Austrian resturant. But it was crispy and the meat was tender and moist and put a smile on my face last night when I tried it. And the accompanying spaetzle was just as good as what I used to have in Germany.
I also had an imported German wheat beer (I believe it was Hacker-Pschorr) that made me smile too. Great memories of Germany. Now if only they served my favourite: German dark wheat beer, I would be in heaven!
Great hearty, winter food. We'll be back for a mini-review.
