The variety and vitality of Vancouver's Chinese restaurants never ceases to amaze me. Green Village (2461 Nanaimo at Broadway, 604 258-9018), which serves excellent Northern Style food, and is highly recommended by my hairdresser at Scruple's on 4th who is originally from Shanghai, is a case in point.
Like most Chinese restaurants, you don't come for the ambiance, you come for the delicious inexpensive food which we tried for the first time yesterday. Amidst all the happy Cantonese and Mandarin speaking families enjoying their holiday, we had an excellent lunch.
The hightlights of the meal were: the steamed pork dumplings for $6.25 (loved the way the tasty juice oozes out when you bite into it and the nice combo of flavours when you add a dash of Chinese vinegar), the baked Sesame bun with Beef and Hot Vegetable for $6.25 (the combination of the textures and flavours of the crunchy pickled cabbage, beef and sesame pastry is divine!) and the Shredded Turnip Pancakes for $4 (another great texture and taste combo).
Here are the pictures of what we ate (apologies in advance as some of them are a bit blurry):
Hot and Sour Soup:
Deluxe Stuffed Sweet Rice $3.20
Dan Dan Noodles $5.25
Baked Sesame Bun with Beef and Hot Vegetable $6.25
Steamed Pork Buns (really they are dumplings not buns!) $6.25
Shredded Turnip Pancakes $4.00

Blurry yes, but still looks
Blurry yes, but still looks extremely delish, especially the baked sesame bun with beef and hot vegetable.

yup, set it at ASA 400, but
yup, set it at ASA 400, but the darn camera is so small that my shaky hand still makes the photos blurry sometimes please check the restaurant out, that sesame bun with beef and pickled cabbage (which they call a "hot vegetable" on the English menu for some reason) alone is worth going to the restaurant for!
