Our lunch at Wild Rice Vancouver for Restaurants for Relief

Wild Rice - Front Door with Tsunami Relief Poster

9 of us braved the snow to have lunch at Wild Rice Vancouver as part of today's Restaurants for Relief. And we weren't the only ones who persevered in spite of the weather; we were told that there were about 20% more people at lunch than normal. I bet that number would have been more than double that if the weather had cooperated.

I had a brief chat with Wild Rice General Manager, Andrew Wong, about how Restaurants for Relief got started. At a regular Tuesday meeting, Andrew and his staff came up with the idea but it wasn't until the next Thursday that they decided to make it real. After a few calls and emails, the word was out. Next thing Andrew knew, 13 other restaurants had signed up and his email and voicemail were swamped with requests for interviews from the Vancouver media about it.

Lunch was grand (loved the wild boar and the beef ribs) and the room is stunning as usual. But even better was the fact that 25% went to Tsunami relief. As an anonymous commenter wrote on UrbanVancouver, it's best to donate to the Red Cross directly (since the goverment matches it until the 11th and you get a tax receipt) but if you eat out alot anyway why not dine out where it will make a difference such as at Thai House, Urban Thai Bistro, Chili House Thai Bistro and Samba Brazilian Steak House who will donate 60% of evening revenue on 10 and 11 Jan?
