When I lived in Germany, I used to go the Tukan restaurant in Meersburg and eat their delicious flammkuchen.
Flammkuchen is the German "kissing cousin" of the French "tarte flambée". They are both very similar.
Both are like a Italian thin crust pizza without tomato sauce and are delicious.
Luckily, we can don't have to go all the way to Europe to experience the delights of tarte flambée.
On Sundays only, from noon until two o'clock, La Petite France (2655 Arbutus Street at 10th, 604 734 7844) serves the Alsatian variant of tarte flambée for $9.95 a serving.
Each serving (which looks like a small pizza) is more than enough to feed two, especially if you order a sweet pastry and coffee to go with it.
There seem to be many variants of this recipe, but the one at La Petite France has sour cream, European style smoky bacon and onions on a yummy thin crust. Not quite the same as my beloved flammkuchen but delicious in its own right. Highly recommended!
