Mini-Review: Cafe Gloucester

Cafe Gloucester (3338 Cambie Street, 604 873-3338) is a Hong Kong style restaurant more than a cafe.

The room is slightly more upscale and the food slightly more expensive than its counterparts in Chinatown and Richmond such as The Boss.  In this way, it fits perfectly with the neighbourhood (Cambie and 17th).

Being a Hong Kong style cafe, it serves both Chinese food and Hong Kong versions of western food.  There are all sort of combination dinners and deals such as an 8 oz. steak combo with choice of other protein (fish, ribs, pork chops) with soup, rice, vegetables and noodles and hot coffee or tea for $17.

We prefer to stick to the Chinese food, however.  On our last visit, we took advantage of their late night (after 9p.m.) menu which has lots of great combos  from $5.95-7.95

I chose the black olive and pork fried rice for $6.95.  This is a less known  dish that features the Chinese variety of olives. The subtle Chinese olive flavour  works well with pork.

Barb had Hainanese Chicken Vermicelli with Larsa (a mis-spelling of Laksa perhaps?) for $6.95.

Both came with a hot drink.  I chose my favourite: hot almond milk and Barb had horlicks, a childhood favourite.

For an extra $2, you can also pick soup.  So we picked the Chinese soup of the day featuring Chinese dates,  and dried vegetables slow simmered with pork.  Mmmm. Sweet and flavourful.

For vegetarians, there are lots of choices on all the menus.

Highly recommended for a full meal or a snack.  Great after the movies or after dancing since they are open until 1a.m. on weekdays and later on weekends.  Perfect for those of us who live south of downtown when you don't want to drive downtown or to Richmond and you crave Chinese food!
