UPDATE: December 15. This restaurant is called Foo's Ho Ho NOT Foo's Hoo Hoo as I originally wrote on December 12th! My apologies. I have corrected the rest of this story.
I had lunch today with Larry Wong, a Chinatown insider, at Foo's Hoo HooFoo's Ho Ho at 102 East Pender Street.
Larry knows everybody in Chinatown (including Wayson Choy who is one of Larry's childhood friends) and has lots of great stories about the Chinatown of the 50s up until the present.
And of course he knows about the food in Chinatown past and present including Foo's Hoo HooFoo's Ho Ho which is the last remaining Chinatown restaurant serving "old-school" dishes.
We ordered some of those retro Chinatown dishes: chow mein with slivers of barbeque pork (about eight bucks) and stir-fried gai-lan with carrots (about 10 bucks). This came with complimentary consomee soup with lotus root (soup is free if you order two or more dishes).
An excellent and filling lunch (more like a dinner; you definitely won't need a big supper after eating here!) for $20 without tip. We'll be back for a mini-review!
