We were downtown to catch Los Zafiros at the VIFF on Friday and had to try out Kitanoya Guu with Otokomae. Like the other Guu's, the homestyle Japanese "tapas" were hearty, tasty and interesting.
Two days ago, a 3rd Guu opened. This is a major boost for eating in Gastown! It's located at #105-375 Water Street and the telephone number is 604 685-8682. From a quick Google search, it appears Otokomae means "handsome" in Japanese.
Barb and I enjoyed a fabulous prix fixé ($32 each for an appetizer, main and dessert) meal at Cru (1459 West Broadway, 604 677-4111) tonight. Just one of those meals that you come away feeling happy, satisfied, and full but not too full.
Everything was fine: the room is not quiety but not uncomfortably loud, hip but not overly so, warm, cozy, small but not claustrophobic.
The best wedding food we have ever tasted was served by the folks at Rubina Tandoori (1962 Kingsway, 604 874-3621) at Toni and Kerrie's wedding in 2001. And we have equally loved the food at RubinaGrill at Granville Island.
Like Green Lettuce, the Chili Pepper House (#1-3003 Kingsway, 604 431-8633), serves Chinese food Indian style. Definitely something that we are coming to appreciate and love!
This room is brighter and the foods seem to be more "Chinese" in seasoning but still with an eye to Indian flavouring.
Harvest Village (1443 West Broadway, 604 742-1668) is my in-laws current favourite non-Cantonese Chinese restaurant. The friendly and cheerful proprietors are from Beijing, the clientele is mostly Mandarin speaking and the food veers authentically from normal Cantonese restaurant fare.
The Aurora Bistro (2420 Main, 604 873-9944) has a wonderful pork tenderloin dish. Glazed with mustard seed and maple syrup, perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. And the perfect complement; an apple goat cheese crisp. This "large" plate ($19) is reason enough for pork fans to visit the restaurant.
